This is an excellent video showing assited latching in the cross cradle position. Notice the mother's hand placement on both the baby and her breast. Her hand on the baby is supporting his back and shoulders, not pushing against the head. Babies have a natural reflex to push back when pressure is applied to the back of their head. Her hand is also well away from the nipple giving baby lots of space to latch on. The baby is positioned 'tummy to mommy' and is slightly under the breast which gives him a good view of his mama when he opens his eyes while nursing. The chin leads into the breast first keeping the nose free to breathe. The baby is tucked in nice and close to mom. Listen to the video and watch the pauses in sucking, this is when the baby is swallowing. Excellent video with Dr. Jack Newman in the background.
